Louisiana boasts a number of academically excellent schools and colleges that are affordable for both residents and non-residents of the state.
The University of Louisiana system is one of the largest public education systems in the United States. Campuses in Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Monroe have enrolled thousands of students since the system's beginnings in 1974. Offering more than one hundred undergrad degrees and about half as many Master's degrees, the University of Louisiana is a noted "best buy" among colleges in the U.S. Their athletics teams, the Ragin' Cajuns, play at the NCAA Division I level (football is Division 1A).
The Southern University system is the only historically black university system in the nation. The system is made up of five campuses that offer Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral degrees. The law school graduates more African-American lawyers than any other college and the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center reaches out to the community in order to help with affairs that pertain to farming and other agricultural concerns.
