The vast state of North Dakota is home to a pretty small number of people, and accordingly, doesn't offer a lot of diverse opportunities for higher education. Residents wishing to remain in the state, however, or those traveling from other states will be treated to an extensive state university system, made up of 11 colleges and universities spread throughout this huge state.

The North Dakota University System is quite diverse; with 7 universities, 3 state colleges, and a College of Science. North Dakota State University in Fargo is immense, offering degrees at all levels in more than 100 majors at its Colleges of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources; Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; Business Administration; Engineering and Architecture; Human Development and Education; Pharmacy; and Science and Mathematics.

The University of North Dakota in Grand Forks is a Doctoral/Research Extensive liberal arts university that enrolls about 13,000 students. The 180 programs of study available here make this one of the most academically diverse colleges in the region.

Outside the state system, there are a few private colleges worth considering. Jamestown College is a four-year liberal arts college that grants Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees to its 1,100 students. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, the school puts computers in every freshman dorm room. Majors range from art to religion and philosophy.
