Oregon is truly one of the most beautiful states in the Pacific Northwest. It boasts hundreds of miles of stunning rocky coastline and beautiful cities, like Portland, dubbed "The City of Roses." The Cascade Range stretches the length of the state, providing students with the opportunity to participate in many outdoor sports. Further east, many forests, rivers, and lakes provide still more recreational opportunities. Nearly all the large cities are found in the west and are just a short drive from the spectacular Pacific coast.
Prospective students will find that the majority of the state's colleges are located in the western portion of the state, near the cities, particularly near the northern city of Portland.
Part of the Oregon University system, Portland State University enrolls about 22,000 students at its downtown urban campus. This university offers about 120 majors at its many schools and colleges, ranging from art history to urban planning.
Technically, the first university in the West was Salem's Willamette University, still a highly-acclaimed coeducational liberal arts college. Women were attending the School of Medicine here (no longer a part of the school) as early as 1877. Today, Willamette enrolls approximately 2,500 students in their College of Liberal Arts, School of Education, College of Law and Atkinson Graduate School of Management. Willamette's motto, "Not unto ourselves alone are we born", encourages students at this college to spend thousands of hours performing community service.
