The state of Pennsylvania offers college students lots of wonderful options. In the eastern portion of the state, the Philadelphia area is crowded with some of the best colleges and universities in Pennsylvania and in the nation as well. Philadelphia provides students with a chance to live and study in the cradle of American history, with both New York and Washington DC within reasonable driving distance. In the western portion of the state, Pittsburgh is quickly becoming one of the most desirable places to live and students who choose this area will be delighted with the rebirth of the city that was once the steel producing capital of the country.
The Penn State system of colleges is immense, with the flagship campus located in the central Pennsylvania town of University Park. Penn State's Nittany Lions football team, under the leadership of Joe Paterno, has certainly made their mark on intercollegiate athletics. Athletics aside, however, the state system provides students, specifically Pennsylvania residents, with a top-notch education at a reasonable price. Penn State has 19 colleges spread throughout the state and a handful of "special mission" campuses, including a School of Law and the Hershey College of Medicine.
Similarly, the state university system boasts 14 universities that serve more than 100,000 students. Extremely affordable, the system accommodates many Pennsylvania residents that may not otherwise be able to afford a college education. The universities are located throughout the state and many have their own specialties. For example, West Chester State University is known as a fine teaching college and for their excellent music department and East Stroudsburg produces fine physical education professionals.
